How do I begin therapy?

Beginning therapy can be a daunting task.
Here’s what you can expect when connecting with me.

  • If what you see here resonates with you, and you are interested in learning more about my style/ what therapy with me might look like, please email me to schedule a free 20-30 minute video consultation.

Here are some questions I will ask:
-What brings you to therapy now? /What would you like to address in therapy?
-Do you have any past experience with therapy?
If yes, what worked well/what was challenging?
If no, do you have any worries or concerns?
-Do you have any financial or scheduling considerations?

I’m happy to answer any questions about my experience, therapeutic style, scheduling, fees, etc.
I encourage folks to consult with a few therapists to learn more about their style and specialities if that would help you to make an informed choice.

  • You might already know by the end of our consultation call if you’d like to move forward with me or not.

If you’d like to move forward, we can schedule our first session.
If you’re not sure, I never require folks to share their initial feelings on the spot. I welcome folks to share their decision via email at a later date if that feels better. If I feel able to move forward given my specialities and confidence in my ability to best support you, I will confirm this during our call. Otherwise, I will let you know if I need additional time to consider my ability to confidently support you, or if I need to consider factors like scheduling, etc.

  • Scheduling our first session can be done at the end of the introductory consultation or at another time afterwards. Once we have our first session on the calendar, I send along consent/policy & intake paperwork for you to complete before our first scheduled session. During our first session, I discuss paperwork and hold space for questions around confidentiality that you may have.

During our first several sessions, we’ll likely develop some goals/focuses and build rapport as we acclimate to our shared space together.

  • Typically, I meet with folks weekly or bi-weekly for ongoing sessions, usually at the same day/time each week.

  • Folks sometimes take breaks from therapy from time to time for many different reasons. If you would like to pause with therapy, I welcome you back whenever you’re ready. The only caveat is that I may not have available appointments when you reach out to reconnect. I do my best to accommodate folks who are reconnecting with me to continue working together, but there are times when our schedules or other factors don’t align. If this happens, I will be glad to provide potential referrals and support folks in the process of connecting with a new therapist.
